BARKSDALE'S BULLETIN
Q2 WEEK 2 November 4 2022
Thank you for sharing such wonderful students with me. I hope you have had a restful, relaxed, and adventurous weekend. Thank you for sharing such wonderful students with me. We have been busy throughout quarter 1 building community and strengthening our relationships with our classmates as we learn to work productively in whole groups, teams, and individually. Please check your emails for a Sign up Genius Conference sign up for the coming weeks. All conferences will be virtual unless you indicated an in-person conference on the emailed Conference Survey on October 24th in the class update. Conferences are teacher-led with student and parents present. Building a partnership between parent, teacher, and child will help all parties involved know that we are all working together for a successful year. The purpose of this conference is to address to communicate to you the areas your child is excelling in and provide specific ideas on how to improve any areas of concern. We will also address any of your questions or concerns during this time. If you are unable to attend one of these days - please let me know and I will work to accommodate your schedule.
P2 - CREATIVITY
Our Positivity Project Character Strength for last week was CREATIVITY. 'Creative people can look at the world in original ways. They are open to new experiences, and have an imaginative and independent thought process. They generate lots of different ideas and can pursue them with energy and enthusiasm. Creativity is a process that takes courage. Anytime you share your original ideas with the world, you risk being criticized or even ostracized.' Students watched a video about a 9 year old boy named Cain and his creative creation of a cardboard box arcade that went viral. Students also learned about the creativity behind riddles. Be sure to talk with your child about this week's lessons and find ways to encourage their creativity.

Q1 CURRICULUM REVIEW
READING
'Building background knowledge: Why Scientist study the Rainforest'
In this unit we are building knowledge about rainforests and learning why scientists study them. We are reading the text, The Most Beautiful Roof in the World: Exploring The Rainforest Canopy, by Kathryn Lasky. This week we learned about text structure and how authors organize nonfiction text. We focused on two of the types of text structures (Problem & Solution and Description) and the graphic organizers that help us organize information as we read each type. We also worked on summarizing the information using information from the graphic organizers. Next week we will explore Proposition and Support (Main Idea and Details), chronological/Sequential, Cause and Effect, and Comparison text structures. |
