The WCPSS fifth grade mathematics curriculum focuses on problem solving with the use of a variety of strategies. Areas of study include multiplication and division of whole numbers, and understanding fractional concepts. The focus in these areas is given to fully understanding the concepts of math in order to lay the foundation for algebraic problem solving in the middle school. County generated alignment lessons provide students an opportunity to build on a firm foundation of skills in order to develop an understanding of more complex computation and problem solving. Students are building on the fundamental thinkings of math in order to gain a coherent understanding through greater depth: fluency, understanding, and application of math.
