HUMAN BODY SYSTEMS
In this unit students explore genetics, cells, tissues, organs, and systems through hands-on, inquiry-based investigations. This unit focuses on the human body systems with an integration of technology and real life applications. The use of technology through age appropriate biomedical videos infuses the engineering component into the unit.
Students begin by exploring basic genetics concepts and understanding why organisms differ from and are similar to their parents. Students learn that the human body is composed of cells that form tissues, tissues that form organs, and organs that form systems. Each of the major body systems has functions necessary for life: muscular, skeletal, nervous, circulatory and cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, and excretory.
The use of Revised Bloom's Taxonomy is also included to promote higher order thinking skills extending far beyond a basic knowledge base. Students are assessed with a summative unit test and ongoing formative assessments of their science notebook entries.
